Weapons used by the Americans in the Revolutionary War
Artillery
Mortars: Mortars were initially limited to seige warfare and came in a wide selection of shapes, sizes, and types. The type of mortar depended on its intended use.
Howitzers: The howitzer was originally developed to fire bombs. This required a large bore in order to get the best effect from the larger projectiles, but it also required that the propelling charge be reduced to about one-ninth of the shell weight, in order not to over-stress the projectile.
Overview: All in all, Revolutionary War artillery was used to provide a cannonade so that their soldiers could get closer to the enemy.
